Town Council debates future of Weston-super-Mare

Release Date: 23rd November 2016
On Monday evening Weston-super-Mare Town Council debated the future of the town in a lively Town Council meeting.
Discussion focussed on the Supplementary Planning Document released by North Somerset Council for consultation.  Malcolm Nicholson , Town Clerk at the Town Council explained:
“Although this planning document is only described as supplementary it is probably the most important planning consultation for Weston that we have had for a long time.”
Rachel Lewis from North Somerset Council presented the Supplementary Planning Document to Councillors who were broadly supportive of the document. Whilst they welcomed North Somerset Council’s investment in the town and plans for regeneration, Councillors raised concerns that if new residential properties were created it would need to be quality housing  that would attract families and professionals  to live in the town centre, and there  would  also need to be jobs and infrastructure to support this development, particularly in light of the lack of GP provision in the town.
Councillors had heard earlier in the meeting from Alan Rice and Steve Emery from the Patient Participation Groups representing Graham Road Surgery and the Stafford Medical Group regarding the crisis in GP provision facing the town. Following a motion to Council, Councillors resolved to write to NHS England to demand a plan of action.
